Lean Manufacturing

Lean Manufacturing is an holistic approach to enable businesses improve their profitability and competitiveness through the identification and elimination of wasteful practices and behaviour.

It is an improvement methodology, appropriate for any type of organisation, irrespective of whether it operates in the manufacturing or service sectors. Lean Manufacturing focuses the Organisation on "value adding" activities. Non "value adding" activities will be minimised and ideally eliminated.

Many businesses carry an unnecessary burden of waste. For organisations working in today's harsh economic environment, lean manufacturing can often make the difference between success and complete failure.

There are “Seven Forms of Waste”

    1. Scrap & Defects
    2. Waiting
    3. Inventory
    4. Motion
    5. Transportation
    6. Over Processing
    7. Over Production
To this could be added: Under Utilisation of Human Resources.

These “Wastes” are often accepted as a typical and necessary cost in carrying out the everyday function of the business. However they should all be viewed as opportunities for improvement. In competitive environments where several companies are dealing in similar products only the most efficient organisations. Those adopting “Lean Manufacturing” will succeed at the expense of their competition. In non-competitive markets the benefits of Lean Manufacturing will be represented by significant improvements to the bottom line.

The Lean Group approach to implementing an overall strategy for Lean Manufacturing would include an organisational assessment, a pilot project(s) followed by a roll out programme. The identification of “Key Performance Measures” and the “Development of Staff” will form the foundation upon which the achievements will be secured, and by which the concept of “Lean Manufacturing” will become embedded in the organisational culture.

The approach the Lean Group adopt can be as broad as is required, typically organisations initially look at their internal operation and after achieving success, begin to address waste in an often greater area of opportunity, their external supply chain.
