Six Sigma
Six Sigma is a system of Continuous
Improvement incorporating waste elimination, defect
prevention and reduction in variation. The overall objective
of Six Sigma is to ensure that the organisations that
undertake this methodology achieve a quality target
of less than 3.4 non-conforming parts per million. This
level of performance will in turn result in a real improvement
to the bottom line, through reduction in costs, improved
operational efficiencies and enhanced customer satisfaction.
The Six Sigma process can be applied
to an operation in its entirety, or to any specific
area of concern, such as procurement, design, manufacturing
etc. Statistical analysis is used to identify the areas
of greatest opportunity and direct scarce resources
at those, which are likely to generate the most significant
benefits.
The organisation of personnel involved
in the Six Sigma process is structured like a military
operation with a hierarchy that includes Champions,
Mentors, Black Belts and Green Belts, all with their
own specific role to play, and all actively involved
in the pursuit of operational excellence. The role of
the Mentor is to develop and direct organisational strategy,
Black Belts establish and control individual project
teams that are focused on specific projects, whilst
Green Belts apply their technical skills within the
team in a hands on manner to generate actual performance
improvement.
The Lean Group offer an introduction
to Six Sigma, Six Sigma project selection, mentoring
and training to Yellow, Green up to Master Black Belt status, or assistance
and support with any Six Sigma project either in progress
or at commencement.
