Six Sigma

Six Sigma methodologies enable world-class quality and continuous improvement to enable the highest level of customer satisfaction.

The Sigma (σ)is a unit of measure that represents the distribution or spread about the mean or average of a process. The higher the Sigma value the less variation and hence fewer defects the process will have. A six sigma process has 3.4 defects per million opportunities (DPMO).

The most commonly used methodology is a project based approach consisting of 5 phases; Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve & Control (DMAIC).

As the primary aim is to identify sources of process variation that result in undesirable process outputs and to subsequently eliminate / reduce these, there is much in common with Lean which aims to identify and eliminate sources of waste. In many cases waste & process variation are found to be one in the same. Both approaches intend to standardize and control the optimised process. This is widely recognized and is evidenced through the development of a lean sigma approach, commonly adopted by an increasing number of organizations.
